Understanding Indexing

Indexing is the process where search engines analyze, process, and store web page content in their databases. When a page is indexed, it becomes eligible to appear in search results. A page must first be crawled (discovered), then processed (content analyzed, links extracted), and finally added to the index. Pages can be excluded from indexing using the noindex meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header. Common indexing issues include blocked resources (CSS/JS), noindex tags, redirect loops, and server errors. Monitor your index coverage in Google Search Console to identify and fix indexing problems.
